Fifty works were chosen for the purpose of the exhibition, many of them shown in public for the first time. They were created by the most important painters of the period: Kostis Parthenis, Photis Kontoglou, Spyros Papaloukas, Nikos Engonopoulos, Yannis Tsarouchis, Spyros Vassiliou, Agenor Asteriadis and Polykleitos Rengos. The exhibition was divided into five units.
1. Kostis Parthenis, the teacher and the pioneer in the discourse with Byzantine art.
The first unit focused on Kostis Parthenis, and on the modern way in which he incorporated Byzantine motifs in his works. Among the exhibits, there was a copy of a Byzantine painting made by Parthenis, the only one existing.
2. The journey to Mount Athos. The discovery of Byzantine art -the production of copies.
This unit hosted works from the most prominent representatives of the Thirties Generation (Kontoglou, Papaloukas, Asteriadis, Tsarouchis, Rengos )inspired by their travels to Mount Athos, Meteora, and other important Byzantine monuments.
3. Photis Kontoglou and his students
The important contribution of Photis Kontoglou, pioneer of the Thirties Generation, in the "discovery" of Byzantine art and its influence on modern Greek painting.
4. Commissions for religious paintings
In this unit some of the most important commissions for religious paintings of the Interwar period were presented, which were made by important artists of the Thirties Generation. Among them, the Church of Hagios Dionysios the Areopagites in Athens by Spyros Vassiliou, the cathedral of Amfissa, by Spyros Papaloukas, the Church of Hagios Nikolaos in Volos by Agenor Asteriadis, the cathedral of Hagios Demetrios in Siatista, and the Church of Hagios Stylianos in Thessaloniki by Polykleitos Rengos, the despotic icons in the iconostasis in the Church of Hagios Spyridon in New York by Nikos Engonopoulos.
5. The influence of Byzantine art on secular production
The last unit focused on the influence of the Byzantine art on the secular works of the artists of the Thirties Generation.
